Bristol's BIG Market took place on the penultimate day of the this year's Big Green Week
. Over 200 stalls pitched up along Corn Street and its surrounds within the old city. Alongside products and tips on how to live a greener lifestyle, there was a bustling food market. Local growers, farmers, small scale producers and artisan makers were joined by street food vendors. On St Stephen Street, the Bristol BEATS
collective were out in force, joined by Chomp
; Tin Can Coffee Co
and Platinum Pancakes
. All cooking up a storm, the smells were amazing and made it difficult to choose where to go eat.
One of my favourite sections of the market was the Suitcase Sale -you could sell anything, as long as it fit into a suitcase. Taking place in Copper Jacks -a new venue on Corn Street which housed a pop up tea room by Cox and Baloney
; there were suitcases containing a myriad of delightful things. I bought a tin can posy of blousy pink peonies and burgundy tipped astrantia, from Holly Mitchell and, the tea towels by Rolfe and Wills
and handcrafted wooden objects by Nick Hammond
also caught my eye.
The prize for the tastiest thing to be sold out of a suitcase however, went to mother and daughter team Jaipur Fayre.
Freshly cooked parathas, served with masala chickpeas, coriander chutney and some plain yoghurt, gave a great taster of proper, Indian snack food. Washed down with a glass of apple and lychee juice; it was (mum if you are reading this) almost as good as my mum's.
As an aside, heading back to Corn Street; under an awning decked with silk flowers, the Roaring Trowmen
sang rousing sea shanties over the intermittent cheering for The British and Irish Lions. Adding to the wonderful atmosphere, they were fantastic and worth checking out when they play next, at the Bristol Harbour Festival
